Choose Your Bible Wisely
”Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15, KJV
This letter was inspired by me meeting a street preacher.
I met him in Busan, South Korea as I was on my way to a university I wanted to visit.
I asked one of his colleagues for directions, but she couldn’t speak English, so she brought him to talk to me instead.
It turned out they were on an evangelism mission for their church, and their message revolved around repentance, and keeping the passover.
I got curious and wanted to hear more. To my surprise, they had their material ready in both languages: Korean and English. (What a treat!)
We started going through their slides that he had stored on his seemingly well-used handheld tablet, quickly sliding through each Bible passage.
I could do nothing but agree with his message – it was all based on what is written in the Bible after all.
Going through their material felt like a breath of fresh air at the time: some one actually took the time to create slides and add passages such as Acts 2:38 into their preaching material.
”Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Acts 2:38, KJV
But it was soon after this that he started talking to me about the passover. And here we had our first disagreement.
He talked about how it was important to keep the passover, and he invited me to come to his church building to receive this great gift (bread and wine, supposedly Jesus’ body and blood.). I didn’t accept the invitation.
I knew I didn’t participate in the passover offering, but I wasn’t able to explain it at the time.
But now, after some thought, I am able to explain my reasoning.
The reason for my refusal is simple. You see, the body of Jesus was offered once:
”9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.”
Hebrews 10:9-13, KJV
Through this one sacrifice are we saved. We do not need to sacrifice the body of Jesus over and over again in order to receive salvation.
Transubstantiation is a teaching that derives from the Roman Catholic Church. I won’t go into details about this practice. I’ll just say it is not a strictly biblical way to practice passover. And from what I had understood from our little chat, this was the type of passover practice they wanted to invite me to.
Back to the story.
I mentioned that in the Bible it is written that passover is held in January.
(In fact, here’s the Bible verse to confirm it:
”4 These are the feasts of the Lord, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord's passover.
6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.
7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.”
Leviticus 23:4-8, KJV
Passover, and other holy days / feasts of the LORD, are mentioned elsewhere in the old testament as well.
But we won’t delve into details here.)
I celebrate and keep this holy day and feast of the unleavened bread. It just is something I do.
The way you keep these holy days is by doing everything else except the sacrificing of animals (as Jesus is the only sacrifice we need).
(Some might be asking: is it necessary for me to keep these biblical holy days?
The short answer to this question is: no.
So, why keep them? I don’t know what the reason for you may be, but I only do it to please the Lord. It is my pleasure to do so.
My life feels blessed. I believe it is partially because of this practice.
You don’t have to keep them if you don’t want to. Up to you.
I’ll expand on this topic in another letter.)
He argued that the calendar had been changed and that the passover is now held at another date.
He further said the passover can be held at any time of the year. You can accept Jesus’ blood and body whenever you want, and that it is essential for salvation to do so.
(I had participated in this kind of passover practice before at a Sunday church in Finland. I did it before getting into the word more deeply at the time.
I don’t think the modern passover practice is biblical, but I didn’t mention this point to him.)
Again, I pointed out to him that in the Bible it reads that the passover is held in January. Furthermore; I had already celebrated it this year (as it was the month of May when this conversation took place).
We had a little back and forth after this.
He correctly stated that our calendars were changed from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar.
Then he said when this change took place the timing of the passover also changed.
(I’ll just point this out: I’m aware about the calendar changes.
However...)
I disagreed. Because in the Bible it clearly reads when passover is to be kept:
”In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord's passover.”
Leviticus 23:5, KJV
He agreed, that’s what the Bible said. But then he repeated what he said earlier.
It was at the time when I said this:
”Which is more powerful: the Word of God, or the words of some man?”
With a stunned look on his face he simply replied:
”Wow
…
…
(after a long pause)
I know the answer to that question, but I can’t give it to you in English.”
He then went quiet for a while.
And then he sat down, as there was a place for him to sit next to us.
He was holding a Bible in his hand. I noticed it was the bilingual Korean + NIV (New International Version) of the Bible.
I’m always happy when I see this version of the Bible, because it is a great way to start an interesting conversation.
(Just something I’ve noticed during my travels: Korean and/or Japanese version + NIV bilingual Bibles are quite common in South Korea and Japan.
Don’t ask me why. I don’t know. It just happens to be so.)
As he kept silent, I sat down next to him.
I took out my Bible and pointed out mine is the KJV (King James Version) of the Bible.
I said I wanted to show him something.
”Open up your Bible and look up the verse Matthew 17:21” I said.
He did so, and so did I.
This is what the verse looks like in the KJV:
”Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”
Matthew 17:21, KJV
I patiently waited for him to find the verse.
He found the right page. He looked for the verse 17:21 in the NIV and noticed there is no verse 21.
(This is because the verse doesn’t exist in the NIV.
Furthermore, it didn’t exist in his Korean version either.)
With a somewhat panicked look on his face, he asked to see my Bible where the verse does exist.
He read it, and said he can’t fully understand the English text. I told him it is about praying and fasting.
Then I asked him: how come this verse doesn’t exist in your Bible?
He didn’t know the answer, but he said ”I’ll have to ask my pastor.”
(I was somewhat disappointed to hear he needs to ask his pastor about missing verses; even here referring to erring human authority on this issue as well.)
Then he packed his bags and somewhat rushedly left the scene.
I was smiling all the way through this process, as it had felt like one of those ’who’s preaching to whom’ moments.
---
Another story (albeit much shorter) is when I had a discussion with a pastor about different Bible versions.
He said he doesn’t like KJV purists, to which I simply replied that I’m sure other versions have a reason for their existence as well; but I myself use the KJV.
It was this conversation got me thinking about the different Bible versions, and that I should write a letter about them.
And what you are reading is that letter.
The Bible Versions
And so we finally get to the topic of discussion: which Bible version should YOU be using?
If you Google which is are the most popular Bible versions out there, this is the answer you get:
King James Version (55%) (KJV)
New International Version (19%) (NIV)
New Revised Standard Version (7%) (NRSV)
New American Bible (6%) (NAB)
(The percentages show their popularity, according to Wikipedia.)
We will use this answer to do our comparison.
I will use KJV as the standard, as to me it seems to be the most accurate version of the Bible translations. KJV also seems to be the most popular version out there (for good reasons).
(note: I will use biblegateway.com to pull the verses from these Bible versions.
I will be using NRSVA and NABRE versions as they are the only ones available at biblegateway.)
I will also compare results from two Korean versions, as well as two Japanese versions of the Bible (I have many associates/colleagues from these two countries who may be interested in this kind of information).
I will not translate either one into English – if you can’t understand it you can simply ignore it (or you can use it as your language study material if you like, who knows...).
Korean versions:
The Korean Revised Version (KRV) Bible (available here: https://www.bible.com/ko/bible/88/GEN.1.KRV)
Hangul King James Version (KorHKJV) (The Korean KJV equivalent) (available here: https://www.stepbible.org/version.jsp?version=KorHKJV)
Japanese versions:
the Japanese New Interconfessional Translation Bible (新共同訳聖書) (available at bible.com)
口語訳新約聖書(1954年版) (The Japanese KJV equivalent) (available here: http://bible.salterrae.net/kougo/html/) (I will shorten this one as 口語訳)
With our candidates chosen for comparison, let’s begin our study.
The Study
This is a strict verse-for-verse comparison between the Bibles. The most accurate version shall reveal itself to be so on its own.
After (or perhaps during) the comparison, you should take a look at your own Bible to see how it compares to these results. All we are after here is the truth, and the accurate representation of it.
(I also recommend you write down these Bible verses on paper as we go through them.
Like I’ve previously mentioned, these are a fantastic conversation/discussion starters.)
I will not be adding commentary unless it is necessary.
If a verse is missing completely, I will simply quote is as ’-’.
As we go through this comparison, you should think for yourself from context:
WHY would some of these verses be missing from some of the Bible versions?
What is the adversary’s plan behind this (and that) change?
And with that, I think we are ready to begin.
Missing Bible Verses
The theme of the first comparison is missing Bible verses.
It is a self-explanatory comparison, I’d say.
Some Bible verses have gone missing from some of the Bible versions. Strange.
But it is also quite fun and exciting for a Bible scholar to go through this list.
Let’s have some fun.
The Bible verses should be in order of appearance.
With all that out of the way, let’s get started with our first comparison:

Our first study is done. Quite a shocking list of changes!
But we’ve still got other kind of comparing to do.
Next we are going to study Bible verses that demote Jesus Christ to a lower status than what he actually is, and some other edits. You’ll see what I mean.
(I must stress that both, the Korean and Japanese languages, may need further context than a single verse. These languages have similar sentence structure, which is very different from English.
That being the case, I will only include the verse in question – and nothing more. You can look up the context for yourself if you need it.)
Verses Where Jesus Is Being Demoted And Other Errors
I’ll make one thing clear at the start: the standard (KJV) doesn’t demote Jesus.
But the other versions have some glaring errors in them.
I’ll add commentary if I feel it is necessary, but in most cases the verses themselves do the talking better than I ever could.
It probably doesn’t need to be mentioned, but I am not including every single verse where changes have been made.
There are much, much more changes than what I’m showcasing here.
What I am doing is exposing the fact that some of the Bible verses haven’t just been changed; they actively go against the idea that Jesus is the Son of God, who is the only mediator between us and God, and who died for our sins.
Read these verses for yourself for comparison. Think about what is missing.
You will see it for yourself.
(For your information:
”2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
1 John 4:2-4, KJV
With this in mind, think for yourself of what spirit are these Bible versions.)
Without further ado, here’s our first verse:
Galatians 3:17
KJV
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
NIV
What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.
NRSVA
My point is this: the law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.
NABRE
This is what I mean: the law, which came four hundred and thirty years afterward,[a] does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to cancel the promise.

わたしたちは、この御子によって、贖い、すなわち罪の赦しを得ているのです。
口語訳
わたしたちは、この御子によってあがない、すなわち、罪のゆるしを受けているのである。
2 Timothy 4:22

The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all.

The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.[a]

I left the most egregious edit for last.
Have a look at this disaster:
1 Timothy 3:16
KJV
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
NIV
Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great:
He appeared in the flesh,
was vindicated by the Spirit,[a]
was seen by angels,
was preached among the nations,
was believed on in the world,
was taken up in glory.
NRSVA
Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great:
He[a] was revealed in flesh,
vindicated[b] in spirit,[c]
seen by angels,
proclaimed among Gentiles,
believed in throughout the world,
taken up in glory.
NABRE
Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion,
Who[a] was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated in the spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed to the Gentiles,
believed in throughout the world,
taken up in glory.
KRV
KorHKJV

And there we have it.
I’ve shown you all the verses I wanted to shed some light on.
Contemplate on these issues.
Moving Forward
We just went through a list of various Bible verses, and we could see that the changes are identical in almost all cases; and it doesn’t even matter what language we’re talking about(!).
Some of the foreign languages (especially the Japanese translations) do not do as good of a job of showcasing the error I’m trying to present here. Either way, it is clear that one of the Bible versions has been edited down drastically from the original.
I’m not going to tell you what to do from here. But choose your Bible wisely.
